In August of 2023, Elizabeth and I took a "day off" and went to Parke County, Indiana.
While meandering through the countryside, we drove past a sign for The Dairy Shop. Since we love exploring small local shops especially ones that may have dairy products, we turned around and went back to check it out.
When we entered the dairy shop, we were greeted by the co-owners of Twilight Dairy, Amos and Hannah Esh! They were the friendliest people, and once they found out that Elizabeth was a dairy farmer, the conversation turned to cows, milk, cheese, etc. Over the next 30 minutes, we discussed all things dairy and even chatted about the possibility of carrying their raw milk, organic, 100% grass fed cheeses in our farm store.
Before leaving, we purchased several types of cheese and cheese curds. They had so many types of cheese that it was hard to choose.
Of course, when we got home, we had a cheese tasting party in the kitchen! Those cheeses were some of the best that our family had ever eaten.
A few days later, I had a phone conversation with John Esh, Amos and Hannah’s son, who is part owner of Twilight Dairy. He said that at that time, he did not have excess cheese, but told me about their plans to increase production.
Fast forward 7 months! I got the call; WE'VE GOT CHEESE! 🧀 John was happy to inform me that his family’s dairy would be able to supply our farm store with cheese!
I’d like to tell you a little about the Esh family.
They are Amish farmers who have been in the dairy business for many years. Most of those years they have sold milk to Prairie Farms Milk Co-op. They became discouraged with selling commodity milk and decided to switch to an all Jersey herd and direct market their products.
There have been many ups and downs along the way, but they are a very hard working family. Their dairy is now certified organic with 100% grass-fed Jersey cows. They produce raw milk cheeses, cheese curds, and yogurt in a top notch processing facility on their farm in rural Rockville, Indiana.
Their business slogan is “Twilight Dairy where natural goodness is a way of life.”
Because we believe in their business model and their products, we plan to carry Twilight Dairy’s raw milk cheeses, cheese curds, and yogurt in our farm store.
